What is a domain name?
The best way to explain this is by examples.
Google.com, Yahoo.com, UncleDomain.com, Google.de, Yahoo.de,

Can I get one?
Sure anyone can get as many domains as one wants. Of course one has to pay for them. Having said that there are certain domains that you might not be able to purchase. For instance, .eu domains can only be purchased by people living in a Europe.

Where can I get a domain name?
You can buy them online at companies called registrars. Click here to get a list of registrars. We also provide details on each of these registrars to give you a better idea about them.

What do I do with a domain after I purchase it?
You don't have to do anything. People buy domains for various purposes.
Here is a list of reasons people buy domains for:
  • To build websites.
Obviously this is the primary reason to buy a domain. People buy land to build a house, a building or a whatever else they want to build on that piece of land.
Click here to learn about building websites.
  • To sell later for profit.
Some real estate investors buy land to sell it later for profit. Of course, they believe that the price of their land will increase in the future.
In the same way there are a lot of people who buy domains to hold onto them and sell them later at a higher price for profit.
The people who invest on domain names to sell them for profit are called domainers.

  • To park for profit.
Now this is something that most people don't know much about. Some people buy domains that get what is called 'type-ins'. For example many people in California search for mortgage in California. Some of these people are likely to type CaliforniaMortgage.com directly on the addressbar. So if you were to own the domain CaliforniaMortgage.com you just got what is called a type-in.
There are many companies that can put up a list of advertisers on the site  CaliforniaMortgage.com. When a visitor to this site clicks on any of the advertiser links, the owner of CaliforniaMortgage.com makes a little bit of money.
There are many people who make a decent profit just parking their domains.

  • For your personal or company safety.
By safety we mean protecting your company or personal name from being used against you. For example, Microsoft, Google and Yahoo all have their own .com's, i.e., microsoft.com, google.com and yahoo.com.
But they also own microsoft.net, google.net and yahoo.net. They do not have proper content on these .net domains, if not, not at all. They own these domains so that another individual or company will not purchase them and build sites against them. Otherwise, someone could simply register microsoft.net and build a site that heavily criticizes Microsoft. Of course there are also trademark issues to consider for anyone who purchases microsoft.net, but that's for advanced lessons.
    Here is another one.
I will assume that you know who Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are. I will also assume that you know they had a baby girl on May 27 2006. They named their baby Shiloh Nouvel.
Now here is an excerpt from AllHeadlineNews.com
Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - New mom Angelina Jolie has reserved 24 domain names featuring various versions of her daughter Shiloh Nouvel's name.
According to a report by the Australian news website, internet registration files show the Web addresses "shilohjolie", "shilohpitt", "shilohjoliepitt", "shilohnouveljolie", "shilohnouvelpitt" and "shilohnouveljoliepitt" - with the extensions ".com", ".org", ".net" and ".info" - were reserved as of May 27, the baby's birthday.
Jolie will have the control of the Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), the Web addresses, for one year.
Jolie and Brad Pitt, appeared to have learned from the misfortunes of fellow stars Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, whose daughter's name, Suri, was co-opted by someone else who registered the URL "suricruise.com".

  • For vanity.
Well you could always buy a domain name like GeorgeBushSucks.com or GeorgeBushTheHero.com or simply MikeAndTammy.com and then never build any site on them. Then you could go around and brag to everyone about the domain names you own.
  • Other reasons.
If you don't want a free web based email like a hotmail, yahoo mail or gmail any more you could always get a more fun or professional email address.
If you your name is John McAndrews, you could get a domain name McAndrews.com and then create an email for yourself like John@McAndrews.com. Your girlfriend could have Jane@McAndrews.com and your dog could have Rover@McAndrews.com. You don't need to build a website on the domain McAndrews.com.
There could be other reasons people buy domains, but I can't seem to think any of them.
If you knew the answers to the above questions already then you are not a total beginner.
